Character Info
Name: the Iron Bull
Canon: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Canon Point: beginning of Trespasser DLC
Age: 40-odd years old
Background: here
Personality:
Loyalty: He has survived years in places that have seen others burn out - badly - and continues to function in the world at large in part due to his dedication to the Qun, and, perhaps, because of the people he chooses to be close to. First and foremost, the Iron Bull is a servant: to the Inquisition, to the Ben-Hassrath, to the Qun. He willingly submits to re-education rather than risking becoming a danger to his people. Throughout his time in Orlais and Ferelden, he reports to the Ben-Hassrath with perfect devotion: the letters are his lifeline, a point of discipline that keeps him from becoming like the savages he hunted in Seheron. After he breaks from the Qun, Bull remains loyal to the Inquisitor and their mission, even though it sometimes means facing things that shake him to his core.
Intelligent: From a young age, Bull was pegged to be in the military. But his caretakers soon realized that he is perfectly willing to follow the spirit of the rules, but not the letter - they realized that he is too smart for grunt work. They recommended him to the Ben-Hassrath, the spies and secret police of Qunari society. Bull tends to see big-and-small picture issues and he plays the long game: he wants to have all the information at hand to ensure his decisions are sound. As a servant of the Ben-Hassrath, he learns how to manipulate people and situations to get whatever is needed. He is a successful spy in southern Thedas, despite standing out like a sore thumb, for ten years before he ever joins the Inquisition - the only reason the Inquisitor knows about his spywork is that he tells them. The Bull has also been known to play mental games of chess while trekking across Thedas.
Caring: Despite an upbringing that taught him to put the greater good before individuals, the Iron Bull forms lasting bonds with those that are close to him. This is seen most clearly in his interaction with the Chargers: he has adopted a band of rag-tag warriors and made them his family. He assures Cremisius Aclassi, his transgender lieutenant, that he is a real man and even offers to talk to Krem's love interest for him. He puts himself in danger to keep others safe, and he never asks his men to do anything that he wouldn't. Bull routinely puts the needs of others before his own - this is partly due to his upbringing under the Qun but it is also how he's learned to show people that he cares.
Controlling: Losing control - of himself, of any situation - is one of the Bull's deepest fears. Bull leaves as little to chance as possible through careful planning and information gathering. Even if an action seems reckless, it's likely that he's thought of several alternatives before engaging. The Bull plays the long game, tries to be aware of all the pieces that are moving and in play, and at times this threatens to overwhelm him.
Dogmatic: Raised under the Qun, Bull remains loyal to as many of its teachings as he can without compromising his priorities. Bull does not seek to convert anyone, but he is unapologetic of the way he follows the Qun, even in the face of very real, very valid criticisms. Bull believes that the Qun gives structure and meaning to his life, keeping him from becoming the mindless, violent savage he so fears. Even after he breaks away from his people, Bull remain dedicated to most of the major tenants of the Qun for the sake of his sanity.
Violent: Even as a child, Bull liked to hit things. He has since learned to channel his aggression into appropriate outlets and maintains careful control over his body and his mind, but there is forever a violent streak simmering under the service. It is the part of himself that he fears losing control of. It has happened at least once before, leading the Bull to slaughter an entire stronghold of enemy combatants and getting a few of his own men killed in the process.
